9/2/10 Eagles ... The Darkhorse Team in 3A?

From Topeka Capital Journal Online (9/2/10)

"Looking for a sleeper team in 3A? It could be WELLSVILLE (Pioneer), which has progressed in the first two years under Mark Luedtke and now has its most experienced squad with 10 starters back on offense and 11 on defense.

Senior Jesse Campbell (6-1, 195) was an all-league on both the offensive and defensive line last year, but will move to running back and linebacker. He'll complement Dalton Hughes (6-1, 200), who rushed for 650 yards last year and the line is hardly bare led by junior Logan O'Dea (6-0, 245), who has started every game of his career."

8/27/10 League Coaches Poll: Wellsville Favored for League Title

From The Miami County Weekend (8/27/10)

" ......  the Eagles now have something else to worry about: living up to the hype of being the preseason favorite to win the Pioneer League, according to a preseason coaches poll.

Luedtke said he was flattered by receiving that high of a ranking, but his squad, which went 4-5 in 2009, also has a bigger goal in mind: advancing to the playoffs. The Eagles don’t want just to advance to the postseason, they have plans of making a deep run.

Wellsville has plenty of experience to lean on, with nine starters returning on offense and eight on defense......." To read the complete article, go to this link: Wellsville Eagles Favored to Win Pioneer League , or, just  click on the document image (pdf.) below.

Pioneer League Background

The Pineer League currently consists of six schools: Wellsville (3A), Anderson County (4A), Central Heights (3A), Jayhawk-Linn (2A) ,Osawatomie (4A) and Prairie View (4A). Jayhawk-Linn is leaving the league following the 2010-2011 school year. There are no immediate plans to add another school to the league.

The Pioneer League's first year for all sports except football was the 2007-2008 school year. The first year for football in the new league was the 2008-2009 school year. Previously all schools in the the Pioneer League, except Jayhawk-Linn, were members of the Frontier League. Here's some background on the break away from the Frontier League and formation of the new league:

Preseason Summaries

From the Topeka Capital Journal:

"A 3A playoff qualifier last year for the first time under coach Kirk Holt, JAYHAWK-LINN (Pioneer) also drops to 2-1A this season and finds itself in a loaded district with Colgan, Oswego and Olpe. The Jayhawks are led defensively by junior linebacker Jake Rowe (5-8, 140), who had 79 tackles last year and also steps in at quarterback."

From the Miami County Weekend:

"Jayhawk-Linn will look to build off its playoff appearance. Even with the Jayhawks moving down from Class 3A to 2-1A, they will be in perhaps the toughest district in their classification, as all six teams advanced to the postseason last season.

Cody Sunderland, a junior, and Taylor Kellerman, a senior, will provide experience at wide receiver. Austin Billingsley, a senior, and Jake Rowe, a junior, have been battling it out at quarterback."

Middle School Summer Strength & Conditioning

Middle School football coach, Brock Campbell, supervised the Wellsville MIddle School strength and conditioning  program for 6th through 8th grade boys.

The program was an outstanding success. Between 20-30 boys participated three days every week throughout this summer.

Below is a photo gallery of the MS strength & conditioning program.

7 on 7 (part ll) - WHS, Lawrence and Perry-LeCompton

July 6 ..... The Eagle skill guys (receivers, running backs, defensive back, linebackers and QB) are said to have outplayed their counterparts from LHS and P-L HS. Great experience and confidence builder.

"7 on 7" is basically a passing drill often used as a competition as well. It pitts QB's, receivers and running backs against their defensive counterparts; linebackers and defensive backs. Kind of like touch football, just more intense. Other than the snapper, there was no need for linemen.

A lot of coaching goes on. Here, WHS travelled to Lawrence High School for some 7 on 7 action. The Wellsville footballers did very well.  The 1st 45 minutes, the two sides practiced against each other.

Coach Luedtke & Coach Clements, watching the troops. Coach Luedtke & Coach Clements, watching the troops.

The last hour was the actual competition. Each team had 2 offensive drives.

You'd be proud of your Eagles. They scored on one of their drives. And... the Eagles stopped LHS on both of their possessions.

These two teams will go at it again on Tuesday, July 6. It's possible another team or two may join in.
